Sevier County climbs from the French Broad River and Douglas Lake in the north to Kuwohi, formerly Clingmans Dome, at 6,643 feet on the North Carolina line. The three forks of the Little Pigeon River run north out of the Smokies and converge near Sevierville. After the national park ended large-scale logging, tourism took over the economy, and the cabin rental business has grown tremendously. The result is a roofing mix unlike anywhere nearby: mountain cabins, condos, farmhouses and suburban homes.
Two wildfires have shown how exposed the county's wooded ridges can be. In late November 2016, the Chimney Tops 2 fire was driven into Gatlinburg by extreme winds; 14 people died, and county officials put the toll at about 2,460 structures damaged or destroyed. On March 30, 2022, the Hatcher Mountain fire near Wears Valley burned more than 3,000 acres and damaged over 100 homes during a high-end mountain-wave wind event.
For a cabin tucked into the trees, the roof is part of fire planning. Ask roofers about Class A fire-rated roof assemblies, how vents and edges are detailed, and keeping leaves and needles out of valleys and gutters, where embers can land.
The same downslope winds that fanned those fires hit roofs on their own. During the 2022 event, a park wind tower on Cove Mountain, about three miles east-southeast of Wears Valley, recorded an 85 mph gust. NWS Morristown research has identified Cove Mountain as one of the windiest spots during these foothill windstorms, which come mostly from November through March.
On August 7, 2023, straight-line winds estimated up to 85 mph also cut a 12-mile path from Kodak toward Dandridge, damaging a marina roof on Douglas Lake and tearing RV canopies from their anchors. Ridge caps, edge fastening and how metal panels are attached deserve close attention here.
Many Sevier County roofs sit over vacation rentals, where a leak can cost bookings. Steep lots off Wears Valley Road, the hills around Pigeon Forge and the ridges above Gatlinburg often mean narrow drives, little room to stage materials and roofs that are awkward to reach.
When requesting quotes for a rental, tell roofers your booking calendar, whether a property manager will be the contact, and how materials can get to the house. Written start and finish dates help you block the right nights.

It is worth discussing. Sevier County has lived through the 2016 Chimney Tops 2 fire and the 2022 Hatcher Mountain fire near Wears Valley, both pushed by strong winds. Ask roofers about Class A fire-rated roof assemblies, keeping gutters and valleys clear of leaves, and how edges and vents are detailed to resist embers. Your insurer may have recommendations too.
Very windy at times. Mountain-wave events push air down the north side of the Smokies, mostly from November through March. Early on March 31, 2022, a park wind tower at Cove Mountain, a few miles east-southeast of Wears Valley, recorded an 85 mph gust. A roofer should explain how shingles or metal panels will be fastened for that kind of exposure.
Often, yes, with some planning. Tear-off, weather and steep access can stretch a cabin job past a single day, so share your booking calendar when roofers contact you, ask for a written schedule, and agree on who lets the crew in and checks the drive for stray nails before the next guests arrive.
