Morgan County lies on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, a place of rugged mountain terrain, cold streams and small towns. The Crab Orchard Mountains rise around Frozen Head State Park, the Obed Wild and Scenic River joins the Emory southwest of Wartburg, and U.S. 27 runs south to Harriman and I-40. Wartburg was founded in the mid-1840s by German and Swiss settlers, and Rugby, on the county's northwest side, was started in 1880 by English author Thomas Hughes.

Tornadoes on the plateau

Morgan County has been struck by two deadly tornadoes this century. On November 10, 2002, a tornado tore through Mossy Grove and Joyner, killing seven people and destroying dozens of homes. On February 6, 2025, an EF-2 tornado with estimated peak winds of 135 mph tracked nearly 14 miles through the Deer Lodge area, destroying two mobile homes, damaging barns and outbuildings, and killing two people.

Manufactured homes and farm buildings fare worst in storms like these. If you own one, ask roofers about roof-over systems and fastening, and make sure the contractor has worked on manufactured homes before.

Snow and freeze-thaw

Winter storms can pile up snow here. In January 2024, a report a mile west-northwest of Wartburg measured 10 inches, with 6 inches at Petros and 8.5 inches west of Oliver Springs.

Heavy snow and repeated freezing and thawing find weak spots: ice backing up at the eaves, failed flashing around chimneys and soft decking. When comparing quotes, ask whether ice-and-water shield is included at the eaves and in valleys, and how many feet of it.

Historic Rugby and older communities

Rugby's historic district, listed on the National Register in 1972 as the Rugby Colony, is known for its Victorian architecture, and new homes in its Beacon Hill area must follow that style. Petros is home to the former Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, which closed in 2009 and reopened in 2017 as a distillery and tour site.

Older houses in Wartburg, Sunbright, Oakdale and Coalfield, along with rural homes on large lots, often need a roofer willing to make the drive for a careful inspection. Ask each one how they handle multiple old layers and rotted decking, and whether those costs are in the price or billed as extras.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Questions from Morgan County Homeowners

Has Morgan County had tornadoes recently?

Yes. On February 6, 2025, an EF-2 tornado with estimated peak winds of 135 mph tracked nearly 14 miles through the Deer Lodge area, destroying two mobile homes and damaging barns and outbuildings. In November 2002, a tornado killed seven people around Mossy Grove and Joyner. After any severe storm, have roofs and outbuildings checked even if damage looks minor.

Can I get quotes for a manufactured home roof?

Yes. When roofers contact you, say the home is manufactured and describe the current roof, whether metal or shingles. Options and pricing differ from a site-built house, so ask whether the roofer regularly works on manufactured homes and which roof-over or replacement system they would use.

I own an older home near Rugby. Are there style rules?

Rugby Colony has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972 and is known for Victorian buildings, and new homes in the Beacon Hill area must follow that Victorian style. If your house is in or near the historic area, ask Historic Rugby about any guidelines before choosing a roof color or material.

Is this service really free?

Yes. Homeowners never pay us anything. Roofing contractors in our network pay a referral fee, and you are under no obligation to hire any of them.

How many roofers will contact me?

Up to 3. We match your request with local, licensed and insured roofers who handle your type of project, so you can compare quotes without calling around.

Can I call or text instead of filling out the form?

Yes. Call or text Ben Arp at (423) 920-4333 with your address and what is going on with your roof, and your request will be passed to local roofers who serve your area. If no one picks up, leave a voicemail or send a text.
