Union County is ridge-and-valley country. Copper Ridge, Hinds Ridge and Lone Mountain run across it, and Maynardville sits near the center of narrow Raccoon Valley, about 15 miles from Knoxville along State Route 33. The Clinch River crosses the north end as part of Norris Lake, and water makes up nearly a tenth of the county's area. When TVA's Norris Dam flooded the valley in the 1930s, towns such as Loyston disappeared and families went through what they called The Move.

Norris Lake homes around Sharps Chapel

Sharps Chapel lies on a peninsula along the northern shore of Norris Lake, with water on several sides and many waterfront subdivisions. Big Ridge State Park, where Big Ridge Dam forms a small lake off a Norris Lake inlet, sits just south of the Loyston Sea, one of the widest stretches of the reservoir.

Lake homes here can be reached by steep, winding drives, and some sit well below the road. Mention access when roofers call, along with how exposed the house is to wind off open water, since both affect fastening, material choice and labor.

Farms and valley communities

Away from the lake, State Routes 33, 61, 131 and 144 tie Maynardville to Luttrell, Plainview and Blaine. Luttrell sits in its own valley between Copper Ridge and Clinch Mountain. Electricity did not reach much of Union County until the mid-1950s, about two decades after Norris Dam was finished.

Roofing work here ranges from farmhouses and barns to manufactured homes and newer houses closer to the Knox County line, and one property may have several roofs worth quoting together. Ask for each structure as a separate line item so you can decide what to do now and what can wait.

Wind and falling trees

Recent National Weather Service storm reports from Union County describe trees and power lines coming down. On May 6, 2022, law enforcement reported trees and lines down in Luttrell, Sharps Chapel and Maynardville, and on January 12, 2023, trees fell widely across the county. In January 2024, a spot three miles south of Maynardville measured 8.3 inches of snow.

On wooded lots, a fallen limb can crack decking even when shingles look fine from the ground. After a storm, have a roofer look from the roof and from the attic for split boards or daylight.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Questions from Union County Homeowners

Will roofers come out to Sharps Chapel?

You can request quotes from anywhere in Union County, including the Sharps Chapel peninsula on Norris Lake, and matched roofers usually reach out within 24 to 48 hours. It helps to describe the drive and how far materials must be carried, because steep lake lots affect labor and the price.

What should I do if a tree limb hits my roof?

If water is getting in, cover the area or ask a roofer for an emergency tarp, then photograph the damage before anything is moved. Storms in recent years have brought down trees around Luttrell, Sharps Chapel and Maynardville, and limbs can crack decking even when shingles look intact, so ask for an attic check too.

Can I get one quote for my house and barn?

Ask for it. Mention every structure you want covered when roofers call, including barns, sheds and porches, and ask them to price each separately so you can compare. Some roofers focus on houses and others on metal farm buildings, so getting up to three quotes helps you find the right fit.

Is this service really free?

Yes. Homeowners never pay us anything. Roofing contractors in our network pay a referral fee, and you are under no obligation to hire any of them.

How many roofers will contact me?

Up to 3. We match your request with local, licensed and insured roofers who handle your type of project, so you can compare quotes without calling around.

Can I call or text instead of filling out the form?

Yes. Call or text Ben Arp at (423) 920-4333 with your address and what is going on with your roof, and your request will be passed to local roofers who serve your area. If no one picks up, leave a voicemail or send a text.
