Gutters are easy to ignore until they overflow. With about 52 inches of rain a year in Knoxville, gutters that are clogged, undersized or pulling away from the house send water where it does the most damage: behind fascia boards, under shingle edges, and down against your foundation. Many roofers install gutters, and a roof replacement is a natural time to replace them too.
Gutters collect the water running off your roof and move it to downspouts that carry it away from the house. When they back up, water spills over the front, soaks the fascia and soffit, and can wick under the first course of shingles. At the ground, it pools against the foundation, which leads to wet crawlspaces and basements.
Overflowing gutters after heavy rain are often mistaken for a roof leak near the eaves. If you see water stains along an exterior wall or ceiling edge, check the gutters first.
Look for sagging runs, gutters pulling away from the fascia, leaking seams and corners, peeling paint or rot on the fascia boards behind them, water spilling over the front in normal rain, and downspouts that dump right at the foundation. Rust on older steel gutters and repeated seam leaks usually mean replacement makes more sense than patching.
Wooded lots fill gutters fast. If you're cleaning them several times a year, ask about gutter guards, and ask whether larger gutters or extra downspouts would handle your roof's runoff better.
Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on site to the length of each run, so there are fewer joints to leak. Gutter guards range from simple screens to solid covers; none make gutters truly maintenance-free, so ask how each type is cleaned. Downspout placement matters as much as the gutters: extensions or underground drains should carry water well away from the foundation.
If you're replacing your roof, coordinate the two jobs. New drip edge and gutters should work together, and replacing gutters at the same time avoids disturbing new shingles later.
Many roofing companies install gutters, and some exterior contractors specialize in them. When you request quotes, mention gutters in the details box so you're matched with roofers who handle them.
On wooded lots where gutters fill up quickly, guards can cut down on cleaning, but none are completely maintenance-free. Ask how each type is cleaned and whether it handles heavy downpours without water sheeting over the top.
It's often a good time. The roofer will be working at the roof edge anyway, the drip edge and gutters should fit together, and replacing gutters later can mean disturbing new shingles. Ask for the gutter work as a separate line item so you can compare.
