Roane County straddles the boundary between the Tennessee Valley and the Cumberland Plateau, and the escarpment of Walden Ridge is visible from much of it. The Clinch, Emory and Tennessee rivers meet at Kingston, and most of that water now belongs to Watts Bar Lake. Each town has its own story: Kingston grew from Fort Southwest Point in the 1790s, Harriman was planned as a temperance town in 1889, and Rockwood became an iron and coal center at the foot of the ridge.
The East Tennessee Land Company laid out Harriman in late 1889, setting aside larger lots in what is now the Cornstalk Heights Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1991. Its Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and bungalow houses date from 1890 to 1940, and many were built by affluent residents in the 1890s and early 1900s.
Roofs on houses this age can involve steep, complex pitches, dormers, intersecting gables and tall chimneys. Ask roofers whether they have worked on homes of this era and how they handle flashing and ventilation where roof planes meet.
Rockwood sits at the base of the plateau's eastern escarpment at about 892 feet. The Roane Iron Company, chartered in 1867, mined coal and iron ore along the ridge and ran a blast furnace there until 1929, and Watts Bar Lake forms much of the city's southern edge.
This end of the county has taken hard wind. On June 21, 2021, Rockwood reported numerous trees and power lines down throughout the county, and a barn was destroyed. That December, another line of storms brought down multiple trees along Highway 27 south of Interstate 40. On wooded lots, have a roofer check for limb punctures after storms like these.
Kingston, the county seat, briefly served as Tennessee's capital for one day in 1807, and the stacks of TVA's Kingston Fossil Plant are visible from Interstate 40. Homes on Watts Bar Lake and along the Clinch and Emory rivers face wind across open water, so edge and ridge details matter.
Roane County also includes the western part of Oak Ridge and part of Oliver Springs, and a sliver of Harriman reaches into Morgan County. When you request quotes, give the full street address so roofers know which local office handles your home.

It can. Cornstalk Heights is a National Register historic district of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and bungalow homes built between 1890 and 1940. Older roofs may have several layers, worn board decking and chimney flashing that needs rebuilding. Ask the City of Harriman whether any local review applies, and choose a roofer comfortable with older, steeper roofs.
