Campbell County sits where the Cumberland Mountains to the northwest meet the Ridge-and-Valley to the southeast. Elevations run from just under 1,000 feet near Norris Lake to 3,534 feet on Cross Mountain. Early in the 20th century, coal from the Jellico area made it Tennessee's largest coal-producing county. Today LaFollette sits in Powell Valley with Jacksboro and Caryville nearby along U.S. 25W, Norris Lake spreads to the south, and Jellico sits in the mountains on the Kentucky line.

Mountain towns and coal-era houses

Jellico grew quickly after rail service arrived in 1883 and mines spread through the Jellico Mountains. The town fills the Elk Creek valley across the bases and slopes of three steep hills, and Indian Mountain State Park was built on a reclaimed strip mine at its western edge. LaFollette was founded around 1890 by the LaFollette Coal, Iron, and Railway Company and incorporated in 1897.

Older houses in these towns may sit on hillsides with roofs layered over more than once. Expect a roofer to check the decking, and to plan around steep yards and narrow streets when placing ladders and a dumpster.

Wind on the ridges

During the March 30, 2022 high-wind event, the airport weather station near Jacksboro recorded a 62 mph gust, and in Jellico the wind blew part of a house's roof off. In December 2021, a fast-moving line of storms brought down trees in Jellico as well.

Exposed hillsides and ridge-top homes call for careful attention to starter courses, edge metal and ridge caps. If you are choosing between shingles and metal, ask each roofer for the product's wind rating and how it will be fastened.

Norris Lake and Cove Lake

Norris Lake, built by TVA in the 1930s, is the county's main body of water and dominates the area south of LaFollette. Cove Lake State Park near Caryville surrounds a smaller TVA-built recreational lake fed by Cove Creek. Homes and cabins along the coves deal with heavy tree cover, damp shade and steep access.

Hail reaches the county too: on May 6, 2022, a resident near Pioneer reported 1.25-inch hail along with trees and power lines down. After a storm like that, look for dented gutters and vents and get a roofer's opinion before calling your insurer.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Questions from Campbell County Homeowners

How strong has the wind been in Campbell County?

Strong enough to strip roofing. On March 30, 2022, the airport weather station near Jacksboro measured a 62 mph gust, and in Jellico wind blew part of a house's roof off. Ask roofers how they fasten shingles or metal panels on exposed sites and what wind rating the product carries.

What should I know before reroofing an older house in LaFollette or Jellico?

Older homes in these coal-era towns may have more than one layer of shingles, board decking with gaps, or chimneys that are no longer used. Ask each roofer whether the quote includes a full tear-off, how they price replacing damaged decking, and what they will do with old chimneys and flashing.

Is this service really free?

How many roofers will contact me?
