Federal projects shaped Anderson County's housing as much as the land did. The Tennessee Valley Authority built Norris Dam on the Clinch River from 1933 to 1936 and laid out the town of Norris to house its workers, and in 1942 the Manhattan Project brought Oak Ridge. North of Clinton the ground rises toward the Cumberland Mountains and former coal communities such as Briceville and Rocky Top, while Andersonville sits just south of Norris Lake and its wooded coves.

Norris, the planned TVA town

Norris was built in 1933 as a model planned community, with winding roads that follow the terrain, a central green and a surrounding greenbelt borrowed from England's garden city movement. Its houses came from twelve basic designs, each with a porch and fireplace, built of local wood and stone, and many were among the first all-electric homes. The town has been on the National Register of Historic Places as the Norris District since 1975.

Reroofing one of these houses calls for some care. Framing and decking from the 1930s may not match modern lumber sizes, chimneys need sound flashing, and you may want a material that keeps the original look. Check with the City of Norris about any local requirements before you choose.

Coal towns north of Clinton

Rocky Top, known first as Coal Creek and then as Lake City before taking its current name in 2014, straddles the Anderson and Campbell county line along Interstate 75. Nearby Briceville is another former mining community, and the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area reaches into the county's rugged northern end.

Hillside lots, older frame houses and manufactured homes are all part of the mix up here. An older roof may hide more than one layer of shingles that has to come off before new material goes on, so ask whether each quote assumes a full tear-off.

Weather in the Clinch River valley

Clinton sits on a stretch of the Clinch River that is technically part of Melton Hill Lake, with State Route 61 running northeast to Norris and Andersonville. On May 16, 2023, the National Weather Service logged 1-inch hail five miles southwest of Clinton and hail up to an inch northeast of Oak Ridge. During the January 2024 snowstorm, a spot two miles northwest of Clinton measured 10 inches.

After hail, ask a roofer to check soft metals such as vents, flashing and gutters, along with shingle bruising and granule loss, and photograph anything they find before you call your insurer.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Questions from Anderson County Homeowners

I own one of the original houses in Norris. What should I tell a roofer?

Tell them the house is in the Norris District, the TVA-built town listed on the National Register in 1975. The original houses used local wood and stone and each had a fireplace, so expect chimney flashing to need attention. Ask about decking condition, whether the material suits the house, and check with the City of Norris about local requirements.

Does Anderson County get damaging hail?

It happens. During the May 16, 2023 storms, the National Weather Service received reports of 1-inch hail five miles southwest of Clinton and hail from 0.7 to 1 inch about six miles northeast of Oak Ridge. Stones that size can bruise shingles and dent metal vents, so an inspection is worth scheduling even when nothing is leaking.

Can I get quotes for a lake cabin near Andersonville?

Yes. Requests are welcome from anywhere in Anderson County, including Andersonville, Norris, Briceville and Rocky Top. For a cabin on a Norris Lake cove, describe how steep the access is and whether materials must be carried down to the house, because that affects labor and the final price.

Is this service really free?

Yes. Homeowners never pay us anything. Roofing contractors in our network pay a referral fee, and you are under no obligation to hire any of them.

How many roofers will contact me?

Up to 3. We match your request with local, licensed and insured roofers who handle your type of project, so you can compare quotes without calling around.

Can I call or text instead of filling out the form?

Yes. Call or text Ben Arp at (423) 920-4333 with your address and what is going on with your roof, and your request will be passed to local roofers who serve your area. If no one picks up, leave a voicemail or send a text.
