Clinch Mountain splits Grainger County in two. South of it lie Rutledge, Bean Station, Blaine and Joppa, with Cherokee Lake along the southern edge; the northern section reaches the Clinch River arm of Norris Lake. Tomatoes have long been the leading crop, and the county counted more than 650 greenhouses in 2018. TVA's Cherokee Dam flooded the original Bean Station in 1942, and nearly half of the families relocated for that project came from Grainger County.

Big hail around Rutledge and Bean Station

Grainger County has taken some very large hail. On May 8, 2024, stones approaching 2.5 inches fell near Rutledge and 1.5-inch hail was reported in Bean Station, part of a storm the National Weather Service said produced hail in excess of baseball size across Grainger and Hamblen counties.

Hail that size can crack shingles, punch through skylights and dent metal roofs and greenhouse frames. After an event like that, get an inspection before the next heavy rain and document damage with dated photos. Tennessee law also lets you cancel a roofing contract within three business days of receiving your insurer's written notice that the claim is not covered.

Barns, greenhouses and farm roofs

With a farm economy, many properties have more than one roof. On February 6, 2025, a high-end EF-1 tornado with 110 mph winds tracked about four miles near Thorn Hill along Highway 131, damaging the roofs of several barns and outbuildings and destroying one large barn before ending on the side of Clinch Mountain near U.S. 25E.

If you want a farm building quoted with the house, say so up front and ask for separate line items. Metal panels on barns need different fasteners, trim and closures than a shingled house, so confirm the roofer does that kind of work.

Cherokee Lake and new building

Grainger County has no county-wide zoning, and new construction has been concentrated near the Cherokee Lake shoreline and around Bean Station and Blaine. That leaves a wide range of roofs, from new lake houses to older farmhouses and manufactured homes, so quotes can differ a lot in scope.

Lakeside property also catches wind: during the May 6, 2022 storms, a trained spotter documented wind damage at German Creek Marina near Bean Station. Ask about wind-rated materials and how edges and ridge vents will be secured.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Questions from Grainger County Homeowners

Can I back out of a roofing contract if insurance denies my hail claim?

Tennessee law gives you that right. If your insurer sends written notice that all or part of the claim is not covered, you can cancel the roofing contract by notifying the roofer before midnight on the third business day after receiving that notice. The cancellation should be signed and dated, and the roofer must return payments, with limited exceptions for emergency work.

How big was the May 2024 hail in Grainger County?

The National Weather Service received reports of hail up to 2.5 inches near Rutledge and 1.5 inches in Bean Station on May 8, 2024, and described stones larger than baseballs across Grainger and Hamblen counties. If your roof has not been inspected since, a roofer can check whether shingles were bruised or cracked.

Do roofers here work on barns and greenhouses?

Some do. When roofers contact you, list every structure you want quoted, along with its rough size and current material. Farm buildings with metal roofs need different fasteners and trim than a shingled house, so confirm the roofer handles that kind of work before you compare prices.

Is this service really free?

Yes. Homeowners never pay us anything. Roofing contractors in our network pay a referral fee, and you are under no obligation to hire any of them.

How many roofers will contact me?

Up to 3. We match your request with local, licensed and insured roofers who handle your type of project, so you can compare quotes without calling around.

Can I call or text instead of filling out the form?

Yes. Call or text Ben Arp at (423) 920-4333 with your address and what is going on with your roof, and your request will be passed to local roofers who serve your area. If no one picks up, leave a voicemail or send a text.
