Jefferson City grew from the Mossy Creek settlement of 1788 and took its current name in 1901, when Mossy Creek merged with Frame Addition and Carsonville. Carson-Newman University, founded in 1851 as Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary, is still in town on Russell Avenue, and the historic downtown is being revived around the Mossy Creek Station festival park. To the northwest, the city touches the southern arm of Cherokee Lake. Old college-town houses, highway corridors and lake property all fall within one small city.
The streets around Carson-Newman and the old Mossy Creek business district are where Jefferson City began. If your house is one of the older ones there, ask roofers to look closely at chimney flashing, the spots where porch roofs tie into the main roof, and the condition of the deck boards under the shingles, since decades of re-roofing can hide soft wood. If you rent to students or faculty, plan the work around semester move-in and move-out.
Glenmore Mansion, built in 1868 and 1869 for railroad president John Roper Branner, shows how much a roof can define a building. The 27-room house is one of Tennessee's best examples of the Second Empire style, which is known for its mansard roofs, and it is crowned by a tower. Few homes are that elaborate, but any house whose roof shape is part of its character takes more planning to re-roof than a plain gable.
State Route 92 runs north from town toward Cherokee Dam, and roads such as Black Oak Road lead to marinas and boat ramps on Cherokee Lake, the TVA reservoir on the Holston River. Homes on open water take wind that has nothing to slow it, which puts the most stress on starter rows, rakes, ridge caps and gutters. Ask how each roofer fastens those edges and which wind rating applies to the product they quote.
If you also have a covered dock or boathouse, mention it in your request. Docks and boathouses on TVA-managed shoreline fall under TVA's Section 26a rules, and TVA approval is required before construction or reconstruction. Ask TVA whether the roof work you have in mind counts as a simple repair or needs a permit before anyone starts.
US 11E, the Andrew Johnson Highway, runs along the south side of the city toward Morristown and New Market, and State Route 92 crosses the west side between Rutledge and Dandridge. For newer houses with straightforward gable or hip roofs, the useful questions are about attic ventilation, the underlayment being used, and what the manufacturer and workmanship warranties each cover.
If a spring hailstorm or windstorm has damaged your roof, photograph it before any temporary repairs and ask each roofer to document what they see in writing. You remain in charge of your insurance claim; a contractor's notes simply give you something concrete to compare against the adjuster's findings.

Yes. Put the property's street address on the form, and contractors who cover that stretch of Jefferson County can respond, whether the house is inside city limits or out along State Route 92 or Black Oak Road. Lake lots can involve long driveways or steep grades down to the water, so mention access on the form to get more accurate quotes.
Ask how many layers are on the roof now and whether the price includes tearing all of them off, how damaged decking will be priced, and how the roofer will flash chimneys and porch roofs that tie into the main house. Get those answers in writing from every contractor so you can compare the quotes on the same terms.
It depends on the work. TVA's Section 26a program covers docks, boathouses and other structures on TVA-managed shoreline, including Cherokee Lake, and approval is needed before construction or reconstruction. Before a roofer starts, ask TVA whether a like-for-like repair on your existing structure needs a permit; changing the structure's size or shape is more likely to.
