South Knoxville is the part of the city across the Tennessee River from downtown. It stayed thinly settled for most of the 1800s because so few bridges crossed the river, and Knoxville annexed parts of it in 1917. Marble quarries, mills and streetcar lines shaped its older neighborhoods, and the Urban Wilderness, about 1,000 acres of parks and preserved land, now gives SoKno a hillier, more wooded setting than most of Knoxville. Request quotes and compare up to three licensed, insured roofers.
Island Home Park began in 1911, when the Island Home Park Company sold its first lot on a 117-acre tract between the river and what became the Tennessee School for the Deaf. Its roughly 200 homes are known for Craftsman bungalows built mostly in the 1910s and 1920s, and the neighborhood was listed on the National Register in 1994. Island Home Boulevard was Knoxville's first designated boulevard.
Nearby, Old Sevier grew up around Sevier Avenue, where breweries and restaurants have revived the commercial strip, and Vestal was home to the Candoro Marble Works. In neighborhoods this old, a roof replacement can uncover plank decking, tired chimney flashing or several layers of earlier roofing that all need to come off.
The Urban Wilderness links Ijams Nature Center, Baker Creek Preserve, Fort Dickerson and High Ground Park, with roughly 50 miles of trails across old quarry land and the hilltops where Union troops built forts in 1863. Homes that back up to these woods or sit on the steep streets nearby live with a lot of tree cover.
For a roof, that means leaves and pine needles collecting in valleys and gutters, moss and algae on shaded slopes, and limbs that can come down in a storm. On steep lots, ask how the roofer plans to get materials up to the house and where the dumpster will go.
Not everything called South Knoxville is inside the city. Parts of it, including the area around South-Doyle High School, lie outside Knoxville city limits in unincorporated Knox County. Confirm which applies to your home so your roofer knows which office handles any permit.
Chapman Highway, which opened in 1934 as the Smoky Mountain Highway and was later renamed for national park champion David Chapman, is still being widened in sections. Work between Hendron Chapel Road and Simpson Road is expected to wrap up in 2026. If your home is near a work zone, ask roofers how they will handle crew parking and debris removal.

Island Home Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which honors the neighborhood's history but generally does not require design review for a privately paid re-roof. Local historic zoning is what sets rules where it exists, so before you choose a material, check with Knoxville-Knox County Planning whether any local overlay applies to your lot.
Trees are the big one. Leaves and needles collect in valleys and gutters and hold moisture against shingles, shaded roof faces grow moss and algae, and limbs can fall in storms. Ask roofers about algae-resistant shingles, gutter guards and trimming branches back from the roof. Checking gutters each fall and after storms can catch problems before they reach the decking.
