How to Find the Best Roofing Companies in Knoxville, TN
Search "best roofers in Knoxville" and you'll get directories, ads and top-10 lists, and it's hard to tell who actually checked anything. This guide doesn't rank companies. It shows you how to tell a strong Knoxville roofer from a risky one in about 15 minutes, using the same checks the State of Tennessee recommends.
Quick checklist: what the best roofers have in common
- The right Tennessee license for the size of your job, verified at verify.tn.gov
- Liability insurance (and workers' comp if they have employees), with a certificate sent from their agent
- A local address and a track record you can check: reviews, references, years in the area
- A written, itemized quote that spells out materials, tear-off, decking and warranty
- A reasonable deposit: Tennessee limits home improvement deposits to one-third of the contract price
1. Check the license first
In Tennessee, anyone who bids or negotiates a roofing job of $25,000 or more needs a state contractor's license; roofing falls under the BC-21 classification. Knox County is also one of the counties where a state Home Improvement license is required for residential jobs from $3,000 to $24,999, and roofing counts. Blount, Sevier, Anderson, Loudon and the other surrounding counties aren't on that list, so for smaller jobs outside Knox County, ask your local codes office what applies.
Look any roofer up on the state's license search at verify.tn.gov and make sure the business name on the license matches the name on your contract.
2. Confirm insurance in writing
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent directly from the roofer's insurance agent, not a photo of an old card. If the company has employees, ask about workers' compensation too. If someone is hurt on your roof and the roofer isn't covered, you don't want that to become your problem.
3. Read reviews the smart way
Star ratings matter less than patterns. Read the most recent reviews and the negative ones, and look for how the company responded. Good signs: specific details about cleanup, communication and how problems were fixed. Warning signs: a burst of vague five-star reviews in a short window, or complaints about deposits and unfinished work.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance also suggests asking for at least three references and checking a contractor's complaint history with the Board for Licensing Contractors.
4. Understand manufacturer certifications
Many roofers advertise shingle-maker programs such as GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed certifications. These can matter because some enhanced manufacturer warranties can only be registered by certified installers. Ask which warranty the roofer can actually register for your roof and get it in writing. A certification badge alone doesn't replace the license and insurance checks above.
5. Compare written quotes line by line
The best roofer isn't always the cheapest or the most expensive. Line up two or three written quotes and compare the same items: shingle line, underlayment, ice and water shield, ventilation, drip edge, the per-sheet price for decking repairs, permits, cleanup and both warranties. Our free quote comparison worksheet lays it out for you.
Red flags to walk away from
- No license where one is required, or the license name doesn't match the company
- Pressure to sign today or "this price is only good right now"
- A deposit over one-third of the price, or a request for cash
- An offer to "cover your deductible" by padding what they send your insurer
- No written contract, or a contract missing materials and warranty terms
- Out-of-town crews going door to door right after a storm

Who is the best roofer in Knoxville?
There isn't one answer for every house. The best roofer for you is licensed for your job size, properly insured, local, well reviewed for the kind of work you need, and gives you a clear written quote and warranty. Comparing two or three quotes is the quickest way to find that fit.
Do roofers in Knoxville need a license?
Yes, depending on the job size. Roofing jobs of $25,000 or more require a Tennessee contractor's license, and in Knox County residential roofing jobs from $3,000 to $24,999 require a state Home Improvement license. Check any roofer at verify.tn.gov.
How much deposit should a roofer ask for?
Tennessee limits home improvement deposits to one-third of the contract price. Be cautious with anyone asking for more, and avoid paying cash or paying in full before the work is done.
