Winter Roof Maintenance Tips for Knoxville
Knoxville winters aren't brutal like up north, but don't let that fool you. The freeze-thaw cycles we get can be tougher on roofs than steady cold. Water gets into cracks, freezes, expands, and makes everything worse.
A little maintenance before winter hits can save you from a lot of problems later. Here's what to do.
Before Winter: The Pre-Season Checklist
Do these in late October/November:
- Clean gutters and downspouts
- Trim overhanging branches
- Check flashing around chimneys and vents
- Look for damaged or missing shingles
- Check attic ventilation
- Inspect attic insulation
Clean Those Gutters
Yeah, I know. Nobody likes cleaning gutters. But clogged gutters cause ice dams, and ice dams cause roof damage and leaks.
When gutters are blocked, water backs up. It freezes at the roof edge. More water backs up behind it. That water works its way under your shingles and into your house.
Clean your gutters before the first freeze. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation too.
Trim Back Trees
Branches hanging over your roof cause problems:
- They drop leaves constantly (clogging gutters)
- Ice-weighted branches can break and fall on your roof
- They provide critter highways to your attic
- Shade keeps your roof damp longer
Cut back anything that's within 10 feet of your roof. If big limbs are involved, hire an arborist – this isn't a DIY job with a ladder and a chainsaw.
Check the Flashing
Flashing is the metal pieces around chimneys, vents, skylights, and anywhere the roof changes angle. It's where most leaks start.
Look for:
- Lifted or bent flashing
- Rust spots
- Gaps in the sealant
- Missing pieces
If anything looks off, get it fixed before winter. Small flashing repairs are cheap. Water damage is not.
Look for Obvious Shingle Problems
You don't need to climb on the roof. Just walk around your house and look up. Use binoculars if you want a closer look. Watch for:
- Missing shingles (obvious)
- Curled or buckled shingles
- Shingles that look different from the rest (could be storm damage)
- Dark streaks or moss growth
Any problems should be fixed before winter. It's harder (and more expensive) to do roof work in cold weather.
Attic Ventilation and Insulation
This is the stuff people forget about. But proper attic ventilation prevents ice dams better than anything else.
Here's the science: if your attic is warm (because heat escapes from your living space), it warms the roof above it. Snow melts, runs down, and refreezes at the colder edge. Ice dam.
Good ventilation keeps your attic cold. Cold attic = snow stays frozen = no ice dams. Check that your soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation, and make sure the ridge vent is clear.
During Winter: What to Watch For
Ice Dams
If you see big icicles hanging from your gutters or a ridge of ice at the roof edge, you've got an ice dam forming. Address it before it causes interior damage.
What NOT to do: don't hack at ice with a hammer or shovel. You'll damage your shingles and gutters.
What TO do: use calcium chloride ice melt (not rock salt – it damages roofing). Put it in a nylon stocking and lay it across the ice dam to create drainage channels. For serious ice dams, call a professional.
Heavy Snow
Knoxville doesn't usually get feet of snow, but when we do get a heavy dump, it can stress older roofs. If snow is more than a foot deep and sticking around, consider having someone rake off the excess.
Use a roof rake (long-handled tool specifically for this) from the ground. Never climb on a snowy or icy roof.
Interior Signs of Trouble
Check your attic after major weather events. Look for:
- Wet insulation
- Water stains on the underside of the deck
- Frost on the inside of the roof (sign of too much moisture)
- Daylight coming through (you shouldn't see any)
In your living space, watch ceilings and exterior walls for new stains or bubbling paint.
After Winter: Spring Check
Once winter breaks, do another walkthrough. Look for:
- Shingles that got damaged over winter
- Flashing that shifted with freeze-thaw cycles
- Gutters that might have been bent by ice
- Any new stains inside the house
Spring is a good time for a professional inspection too. They can spot problems while they're still small.

Get Free InspectionThe Easy Version
If you want to keep it simple: clean your gutters, make sure your attic is properly ventilated, and get a professional inspection once a year. Do that, and you'll catch most problems before they become expensive.
An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure. Especially when that cure involves ripping open your ceiling.
